OBITUARIES

Diana Kerlin
Diana Beck Kerlin, age 60, of Summerton, S.C., passed away on Tuesday, July 13. Born in Toledo on March 30, 1950, to Richard and Virginia (Bryan) Beck, she was a member of Summerbrook Community Church in Summerville.
She is survived by her husband, David Kerlin, of Summerton; daughter, Jenny Kerlin, of Summerton; granddaughter, Emilee Kerlin; sister, Cynthia Beck, of Oregon; and brothers, Steven and John Beck, both of Maumee.
A graveside service was held on July 16 at Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu, S.C.

Mildred Blatter
Mildred “Millie” Blatter, age 97, of Monclova, passed away on Saturday, July 17.
She married Alfred Blatter in 1937, and he preceded her in death in 1981. She spent her life as an advocate for the disabled and was the founder of Project Reach and Independent Living. She worked until the last few months of her life.
Mrs. Blatter is survived by her son, Michael Blatter; special friends, Rochelle White, Tim Mullins, Sara Liwo, Kelly Wilson, Gloria King, Madeline Drozdowicz, Kit and Becky; and the residents of Garden Lake Apartments.
There was no visitation and services were private.

Casey Bucher
Casey Ryan Bucher, age 22, of Toledo, died suddenly on Sunday, July 18.
Born in Toledo on September 15, 1987, to James and Lisa (Gephart) Bucher, he graduated from Anthony Wayne High School in 2006 and was currently a sophomore at The University of Toledo.
He is survived by his loving parents; maternal grandparents, Al and Evelyn Gephart; paternal grandmother, Karin Wright; great-grandmother, Vivian Bisel; uncle, Ryan Gephart; great-uncle and aunt, Wayne and Claudia Wines; and great-uncle, Scott Bisel.
Friends were received on July 22 in the Witzler-Shank Funeral Home in Perrysburg, where funeral services took place on July 23. Burial followed in Restlawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Toledo Area Humane Society, 1920 Indian Wood Circle, Maumee, OH 43537.

Helen Retzloff
Helen Betty Retzloff, age 86, of Toledo, passed away on Sunday, July 18.
Born in Toledo on January 25, 1924, to Albert and Jane Retzloff, she was employed by Lamson’s Department Store, retiring after 30 years. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed reading and puzzle books.
Surviving are her brother, Russell Retzloff, of Maumee; nieces, Drusilla Brown, Deborah Lipps and Karen McDoughon; and nephew, Thomas Weaver. She also will be dearly missed by many great and great-great nieces and nephews, as well as two great-great-great nephews, Brady and Ian Sanchez.
Friends were received and services conducted on July 22 at Hoeflinger-Bolander Funeral Home, followed by interment in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Special Olympics Ohio, 3303 Winchester, Columbus OH 43232.

Ross Wilkey
Ross O. Wilkey, age 72, of Maumee, departed this life on Sunday, July 18, surrounded by his family.
Born on May 28, 1938, in Joliet, Ill., he was raised in the Chicago area. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps and then later was an automobile salesman with a preference for Cadillacs. He married Gladys Konz on October 14, 1983, and she survives.
Also left behind are his stepchildren, Terry (Sandi), Randy (Ann) and Garry (Cheryl) Konz, Cindy (Jay) Balogh, Debbie (Don) Grine and Phillip (Rebecca) Konz; 20 step grandchildren; and 14 step great-grandchildren.
A memorial service took place on July 28 at Blanchard-Strabler Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Betty Spratt
Betty Jane Spratt, age 86, of Holland, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 20.
Born in Toledo on May 27, 1924, to Rudolph and Gladys (Schmakel) Kreft, she was a devoted homemaker and also worked part time for Bargain City and Miller Fireworks. Mrs. Spratt was a talented cake decorator, working out of her home for many family and friends’ special occasions. She also enjoyed crafts, loved children and cherished the time she spent with her family. Affectionately known as “Grandma” to everyone, she will be dearly missed.
Preceded in death by her loving husband, James; sons, James and Tom; daughter, Judy Gross; and brother, William Kreft, she is survived by her children, Eddie (Peggy) Spratt, Debbie (Doug) Bialecki, John (Desiree) Spratt and Melda (Jerry) VonSeggern; son-in-law, Al Gross; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and sisters, Marie Schlapman and Shirley (Dennis) Bast.
Family and friends were received on July 23 at the W.K. Sujkowski & Son Funeral Home, where funeral services took place on July 24, followed by interment in Toledo Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

Clara Everett
Clara Mae Everett, age 92, formerly of Whitehouse and Brooksville, Fla., died on Wednesday, July 21.
Born in Swanton on December 19, 1917, to Glenn and Ruth (Fancher) Bell, she married Harold Everett on October 1, 1936, and he preceded her in death in 1990. Mrs. Everett worked for the Anthony Wayne Local Schools for 11 years as a matron and was a member of the Grand Rapids Wesleyan Church.
Mrs. Everett is survived by her children, Glenn (Martha) Everett, of Englewood, Fla., Clarence Everett, of Waterville, Karen Terwilliger, of Manchester, Tenn., Sandra McQuillin, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Roger (Linda) Everett, of Monteagle, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sister, Betty Lawrence. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Jim.
Friends were received on July 23 at Peinert Funeral Home in Waterville, where funeral services took place on July 24, followed by burial in Highland Memorial Gardens in Waterville. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

Marian Brumet
Marian R. Brumet, age 85, formerly of Oregon, passed away on Thursday, July 22, in Homestead, Fla.
Born on February 25, 1925, in Jenera, Ohio, to Hiram and Louena (Mahan) Gratz, she graduated from Waite High School in 1943. She married E. Merle Brumet in 1943, and he preceded her in death in 2006. A member of First Alliance Church in Toledo, Mrs. Brumet was actively involved in its children’s ministries. For 40 years, she also taught a weekly “Good News Club” in her home, a ministry of the Child Evangelsim Fellowship.
She is survived by her son, Jim (Julianne) Brumet, of Key Largo, Fla.; daughter, Martie (Jim) Young, of Covington, Ga.; sister, Rita (Edmund) Braker, of Maumee; grandchildren, Linda (Richard) Radtke, Mark (Anne) Brumet, Lori (Christopher) Matthews, Elizabeth (Patrick) Docteroff and Noemi Brumet; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Plans for a memorial service in Toledo are pending. A memorial fund has been established at First Alliance Church in Toledo for its new children’s ministry center.

Daniel Everhart
Daniel W. Everhart, age 76, of Springfield Township and formerly of Bowling Green, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, July 22.
Born in Akron on August 14, 1933, to George and Mildred Everhart, he was a graduate of Newcomerstown High School and served during the Korean War in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Yellowstone. He worked for GTE for almost 40 years as a supervising engineer, retiring in 1986. Mr. Everett was very active in the Elks Club for many years. He was an avid golfer, loved classic cars and was involved in many car shows in recent years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Joanne; children, Daniel Everhart, Robert Everhart, Christine (Doug) Brunner and Shawn Everhart; grandchildren, Nicholas and Jessica Brunner, Gene (Marilyn) Everhart, Joan (Jim) Foraker, James (Kathy) Everhart, George (Kathy) Everhart and Kathy Mizer; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends were received and services were conducted on July 26 at the Walter Funeral Home. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

James Taylor
James Willis Taylor, age 53, of Hopewell Township, Pa., passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 22.
Born on August 8, 1956, to Dr. Frank Taylor and Martha (Curl) Taylor, he grew up in Maumee and graduated from Maumee High School in 1974. He subsequently attended The University of Toledo. He married his high school sweetheart, Katheryn Berry, on July 16, 1977. They moved to Hopewell in 1979 and there raised their two daughters, Elycia, 27, and Colleen, 26. His strong work ethic was a defining aspect of his personality. Most recently, he worked at Horsehead Corporation’s zinc-processing facility. Previous work included a 13-year career at Anchor Hocking Specialty Glass Company and nearly two decades earlier as a dental technician. Jewelry making was a beloved hobby that led to a part-time career as a goldsmith at Glatz Jewelers.
Mr. Taylor will be remembered for his sunny outlook, warmth and sense of humor. He was a doting husband, loving and proud father and loyal friend. James found the Lord in his adult life, drew great strength from his faith and was a very active member of House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Aliquippa, where he frequently served as assistant minister. His wide-ranging interests and hobbies included reading, learning and music, which he instilled in his daughters and for years participated with them in his church choir.
Surviving are Kathy, his wife of 33 years; daughters, Elycia and her partner, Brian Ward, and Colleen (Brett) Slatkin; parents, Frank and Martha Taylor; father-in-law, Duane Berry; brothers, Jay (Christine) and Bob (Roxanne); sisters, Jackie, Joette (Gene) Parker and Janet Taylor Pontasch; siblings-in-law, Steve, Linda and Rob Berry; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Janet Berry.
Memorial services took place on July 27 at House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Aliquippa, Pa. A memorial service also is planned at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Maumee, with the date and time to be announced at a later date. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Maumee. Memorial donations may be made to the Keller and Taylor Families Memorial Fund at USW Local 8183, 1445 Market St., Beaver, PA 15009.

George Fender
George Robert Fender, age 88, of Maumee, died on Friday, July 23.
Born on December 22, 1919, in Evanston, Ill., to George and Ruth (Hildebrandt) Fender, he was a Boy Scout and a member of the Methodist Church of Park Ridge. He attended Knox College, where he was on the football team and a member of Phi Delta Theta. Mr. Fender served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II, with his tour of duty taking him to the Pacific Islands. His employment included Sperry & Hutchinson and the city of DeKalb, Ill. He enjoyed collecting antiques and stamps, playing cards and attending Compass Club meetings.
Preceded in death by his wife, Isabelle, he is survived by his children, George Fender, of Orlando, Fla., Ruth Heal, of DeKalb, Ill., and Susan (Steve) Utterback and Jeff Fender, both of Maumee; grandchildren, George Fender, Melissa Utterback and Allison Utterback, to whom he was affectionately known as “G.P.;” nephew, Mark (Elaine) May; and cousin, Alan (Edie) Hildebrandt.
A private burial took place in Riverside Cemetery in Maumee. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the Maumee Schools Foundation.

Bruce Baker
Bruce T. Baker, age 63, of Solon, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, July 24.
Born in Toledo on August 23, 1946, to Richard and Mary Ellen (Thornburgh) Baker, he graduated from Rogers High School and married Karen Snyder on September 25, 1982. Mr. Baker worked for many years for the Chessie Railroad System and in law enforcement in Ohio. He moved to Iowa and was the director of referees and assistant director of leagues for the Billiard Congress of America until his retirement. He enjoyed riding Harleys, working on Hudson cars and trucks, collecting historical items, fishing and playing pool.
Mr. Baker is survived by his wife, Karen; daughters, Rhonda (Dave) Miller, of Waterville, Tonya Baker and Heather Shidler, both of Colorado Springs, Colo., Alicia Baker, of Harper, Iowa, and Brittany Baker, of North Liberty, Iowa; son, Eric Baker, of Solon; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brothers, Randall, Rick and Peter (Tina) Baker. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Brooke Baker.
Visitation took place on July 26 at Brosh Chapel in Solon, where services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 29, with burial to follow in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery near Solon. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society .

Margaret Smith
Margaret M. Smith, age 87, of Toledo and formerly of Maumee, passed away on Sunday, July 25.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughters, Joanne (Sid Hardesty) Mercer and Janice (Mike) Corbett; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Jeanne Smith; and brothers and sisters.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, July 30, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed John XXIII Catholic Church, 24250 Dixie Highway in Perrysburg. The family requests memorial contributions to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
