Frank Becker
Frank H. Becker, age 91, formerly of Maumee, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 2.
Born in New York City on October 13, 1918, he joked that it took a month for the news to reach Europe, at which point they cancelled World War I. Mr. Becker served in the U.S. Army in World War II, guarding German prisoners, and following his honorable discharge attended night school at The University of Toledo’s School of Business Administration for nine years, graduating third in the class of 1957. He married Mary (Maggie) Acker in 1948, but she died too young at age 47 in 1968, and he was left to raise three boys.
The couple lived in Maumee, where Mr. Becker retired in 1978 as sales director of Owens-Illinois Kimble Scientific Glassware Division. He said that he’d never wear a tie again and he didn’t. He was blessed to find a companion in Marcella Gossett while visiting family in California and they shared many fine adventures together in the 1980s and 1990s. She passed away in 2006. Although he moved to Akron in 1999 to be closer to family, he continued to spend time in California. He was a voracious reader and had an eye for detail and a mind for numbers. He was a student of history even in his later years.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Daniel; and siblings, Anna, Daniel and Warren. He is survived by his sons, Larry (Christine), of Copley, Ohio, Dan (Laura Jean), of Raleigh, N.C., and Ray, of Monroe, Mich.; granddaughters, Anna (Christopher) McCallion and Mary Becker; great-granddaughter, Cassidy; sister, Grace Becker; and special friends, Linda and Steve Sites.
In keeping with Mr. Becker’s directions, there will be no public memorial service. Contributions may be made in his memory to Rockynol Life Care Endowment, the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation or the First Congregational Church of Akron Food Cupboard.
